When we work out, we SWEAT. Often so much you can squeeze a puddle out of your clothes. We know it can be hard on the environment, your wallet, and on your fave workout threads to wash and dry them so often, so is it safe to re-wear clothes you worked out in? Cat Kom and resident laundry expert Bethany have some great tips on re-wearing your workout threads AND on the best ways to care for those performance fabrics.

Can you re-wear that workout ā€˜fit?

Sports bras, leggings, and socks have the most touch-points to higher bacteria-prone areas on your body, so those are the items you most likely will need to wash with each use. But for whatever threads you do re-wear, here are some great tips!

Tips on how you can best take advantage of wear-overs:

1) Take it off as soon as youā€™re finished exercising and hang it out to dry, preferably somewhere sunny. This will reduce the growth of bacteria. But if youā€™ve tried to air-dry your clothes and theyā€™re still damp, from sweat or high humidity, itā€™s time to wash.

2) Opt for natural fabrics like cotton, or performance fabrics that wick away moisture.

3) Go for looser-fitting clothes such as baggy tops and jogger shorts rather than tight-fitting leggings, lycra shorts, and singlets. Cat even wears tops with ventilating holes that help her stay drier. These will allow more airflow and reduce bacteria.

4) If your sweaty clothes were left in a bag where bacteria can thrive for a long time after your workout, hey, it happens to the best of us, but eew, time to wash them.

5) If your clothes smell after exercise, wash them. They will still smell even if you hang them out to dry!

How to extend the life of our (often expensive) performance fabrics?

1) Rotate your detergent periodically. And try a natural soaking or rinsing helper like baking soda or vinegar. Bethany loves to add distilled white vinegar but warns us that when the clothes come out of the washer, theyā€™ll still carry a vinegar scent. That does disappear when the clothes dry.

2) There are detergents specially formulated for sweaty threads. One of our team swears they even work on sweaty teenager sports uniforms. Some we like:

a. Mollyā€™s Suds All Sport Laundry Wash
b. Rockinā€™ Green Platinum Active Wear
c. Seventh Generation Concentrated Laundry Detergent
d. The Laundress Sport Detergent

3) Go easy on the detergent. Using too much detergent can cause buildup on your clothes, shortening the lifespan of our fave threads.

4) Wash in cold water. Save your clothes, save some energy.

5) Put your clothes in the sun to dry. Not only are you saving energy, but that beautiful sun is really good for performance fabrics. Cat and Bethany rarely use the dryer for any of their workout clothes.

6 Amazing Reasons You Need To Sweat Every Day

Lifestyle No Comments »

Some people will do anything to avoid sweating. Even if they do a workout, they do it half-heartedly, never really breaking a sweat. But sweating is actually good for you, and not just because of the many benefits that exercise brings. It can even help to heal the body. Whether youā€™re taking a walk on a warm-day, exercising, or sitting in a sauna, it provides multiple healing-effects.
Here are 6-reasons why you really need to sweat, each and every day.
1.Detoxification
An increasing amount of research has emerged in recent years, lauding the detox abilities of sweat. It helps to clear out all sorts of toxins, from heaving metals to persistent organic-pollutants. Eliminating those is important for your good-health.
2.Healing
Sweating help us to heal. In fact, science is just beginning to uncover the important role sweat glands play when it comes to healing all sorts of wounds. Sweat-glands, which are distributed throughout the skin, have been found in studies to contain stem-cells which are crucial for healing-wounds.
3.Endorphins
As the body produces its own uplifting chemicals that are known as endorphins, it is possible to raise these ā€œhappy-hormoneā€ levels in the brain through sweating induced by exercise. Exercising, or simply being active enough to break a sweat is well known to increase endorphins. These are considered natural painkillers as they activate opioid receptors in the brain that help minimize discomfort. The effects of endorphins are so powerful, that they can even be more effective at fighting depression than an antidepressant
4.A Clearer Complexion
whether you workout or sit in a sauna, Sweating helps to open up your pores and get rid of dirt, grime and other debris. If thatā€™s left to accumulate, it encourages bacteria to build-up in your pores, ultimately resulting in a breakout. Sweat carries with it the grime of whatā€™s built-up in your pores and whatā€™s on your face, and if it settles back into your skin, thereā€™s high chance you might breakout.
5.Reducing the Risk of Kidney-Stones
Sweating helps to support healthy kidney functioning as well by eliminating some of the salt and calcium in your bloodstream. In turn, that reduces the amount of salt and calcium in your urine which can lead to kidney-stones. At the same time, the loss of water that results from sweating, whether youā€™re sweating because of summer heat or working out, leads to less urine production. The more you sweat, the less you urinate, which can allow stone-causing minerals to settle and bond in the kidneys and urinary tract. So while itā€™s important to sweat toĀ reduce your risk of kidney-stones, itā€™s also important to drink plenty of water to avoid the opposite effect.
6.Fight Off a Cold or the Flu
Sweating has long been recommended for speeding the recovery of a cold or the flu, and studies have confirmed this, including one 2013Ā studyĀ published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which found that a natural-antibiotic is naturally activated in salty, slightly acidic-sweat.

Night Sweat causes – Excessive Sweating at night is serious?

Lifestyle No Comments »

Night Sweat causes - Excessive Sweating at night is serious?

Night sweats may happen because the sleep environment is too warm. At this case night sweats are normal. But if, environmental temperature is optimal and person still sweats so much, that night clothes and bedding are soaking wet, it can indicate pathological condition.
Night sweats is a nonspecific symptom and can be associated with Variety of diseases include:
malignancies,
Infections, tuberculosis,
menopause symptoms (“hot flushes”),
anxiety,
medicines ā€“ some antidepressants, steroids and painkillers
low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), including diabetes.
alcohol or drug use.
Sometimes we can not define underlying cause called hyperhidrosis that makes you sweat too much all the time.
Although many life-threatening causes such as malignancies or infections have been described, as underlying cause of night sweats, but most patients who report persistent night sweats in the primary care setting do not have a serious underlying disorder.
When the history and physical examination do not reveal a specific cause, physicians should proceed with a systematic and cost-conscious strategy, that uses readily available laboratory and imaging studies, such as a complete blood count, tuberculosis testing, thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, HIV testing, C-reactive protein level, and chest radiography.
The most common Conditions commonly associated with night sweats include menopause, mood disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperthyroidism, and obesity.
Night sweats in women over 40 is the hormonal changes, related to menopause and perimenopause.
Perimenopause is a natural stage of life. It is not a disease or a disorder. Therefore, it does not automatically require any kind of medical treatment. but night sweats and hot flashes during this period can be managed hormone replacement therapy, or mindfulness and cognitive behavioral Therapy.
Anxiety. at this case, night sweats can be accompanied with Feeling nervous, restless or tense
Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom, having an increased heart rate, Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation).
The presence of night sweats alone does not indicate an increased risk of death.
But when night sweats can also be related to serious illnesses like: cancers, Lymphoma,
Leukemia, Infections, HIV, AIDS, Tuberculosis, Diabetes mellitus (nocturnal hypoglycemia),
Endocrine tumors (pheochromocytoma, carcinoid) and other conditions. Autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis can also cause night sweats.
Hyperhidrosis
It is relatively rare condition, in which body produces excessive sweat for unknown reasons. Common places to sweat can include underarms, face, neck, back, groin, feet, and hands.
Sometimes medications can cause hyperhidrosis, it is called secondary hyperhidrosis.
Use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors is a common cause of medication-induced secondary hyperhidrosis. Other medications associated with secondary hyperhidrosis include tricyclic antidepressants, stimulants, opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Management:
Topical agents for hyperhidrosis therapy include formaldehyde lotion and topical anticholinergic medication.
Aluminium chlorohydrate is used in regular antiperspirants. However, hyperhidrosis requires solutions or gels with a much higher concentration.
Food and Drug Administration approved a glycopyrronium bromide-containing disposable cloth (brand name Qbrexza) for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis affects around 3% of the population of the United States.

What causes an infant to sweat on left side while breastfeeding? – Dr. Varsha Saxena

Lifestyle No Comments »

It is common for a baby to sweat while it is breast feeding. This is because the baby skin come in contact with the motherā€™s skin and the skin to skin contact can produce the sweat in the baby. If you are feeding the baby on the left side there can be chances of sweating more on the left side of the baby. Usually it can be on either side of the babyā€™s body. Another thing is the baby requires a lot of effort and energy while sucking. This also produces heat and sweat in the baby. The babyā€™s head has got lot of active sweat glands and so the sweating may be on the head and head also has a larger surface area than the body and generates more heat. But we should watch for any danger signs in the feeding baby like there are any bluish signs in the lips or finger nails of the baby. The baby gets very tired during the feeding, the baby has any choking spells or the baby gets apnea or there is poor weigh gain of the baby, such situations a paediatrician should be consulted and take an opinion.

Why do some People sweat more than Others? | Science Curiosity | Letstute

Lifestyle No Comments »

Hello Friends,
Check out this video on “Why do some People Sweat more than others?” Science Curiosity video by Letstute.

What do you think is the reason behind sweating? Why do some people sweat more? Sweating or perspiration is our bodyā€™s natural cooling mechanism by which our body temperature is regulated.
When we exercise or eat spicy food or when we are nervous, we sweat. Other reasons for sweat can be hormonal shifts, stress, or heat, Because of all this, our internal body temperature rises which results in sweating which in turn causes transfer of our body heat into the atmosphere due to evaporation of moisture. There are around 2 – 4 million sweat glands spread all over human skin. Sweat glands are of two types: Eccrine and Apocrine. Eccrine glands are mostly concentrated on the palms, soles, forehead, and armpit, but cover your entire body. Apocrine glands are found in armpits and groin. excessive sweating is called hyperhidrosis. There are two basic types of it, Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis and Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis. Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis appears in early adulthood in which an individual sweat more in one or few specific areas like feet, hands, face, or armpits. This is a medical condition and itā€™s genetic too. Scientists are still looking for what causes this disorder.

On the other hand, Secondary Generalized Hyperhidrosis affects the entire body. This type of excessive sweating is caused by another medical condition or is a side effect of a medication. Thatā€™s why itā€™s called secondary – itā€™s secondary to a medical condition. But do you know there are people who do not sweat at all. This sounds like a boon, but is it? Some people aren’t able to sweat typically because their sweat glands are no longer functioning properly. This condition is known as hypohidrosis, or anhidrosis.
